St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2017 Tennis Premier Series
The courts of Sibur Arena and Dynamo TC, St. Petersburg, hosted the international WTA Premier Series women’s tennis tournament St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy from January 30 to February 5, 2017. Gazprom Export LLC. became the title sponsor of the event.
This year’s tournament for 28 participants in the singles and 16 pairs in the doubles featured the players of the TOP-20 World Tennis Ranking: Simona Halep (Romania, WTA World Ranking — 4), Dominika Cibulkova (Slovakia, WTA World Ranking — 5, the winner of the final WTA series tournament 2016 in Singapore) and Svetlana Kuznetsova (Russia, WTA World Ranking — 9). Russia was also represented by Daria Kasatkina (WTA World Ranking — 27), Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova (WTA World Ranking — 28) and 2016 Olympic champions Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina playing doubles.
The US tennis player Venus Williams, ex-WTA’s No. 1, was expected to become the main star of the tournament. The five-time Wimbledon champion arrived in St. Petersburg immediately after the Australian Open, but lost to her opponent Kristina Mladenovic, the future finalist of St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2017, right in the first match. The winner of the last year’s St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy Roberta Vinci, Italy, was not able to defend her title either.
In the decisive final match of the tournament, French tennis player Kristina Mladenovic, ranked 51, beat a young representative of Kazakhstan Yulia Putintseva at 6:2, 6:7, 6:4. The match lasted 2 hours and 39 minutes.
Kristina Mladenovic won her first ever singles title in a major WTA tournament. Prior to that, the tennis player had lost three singles finals, yet being a very strong doubles player proved by the champion title in doubles at Roland Garros, her home tournament.
After the match, Alexander Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Management Committee of Gazprom PJSC and Director General of the tournament, said that both athletes were very promising: “Ms. Putintseva and Ms. Mladenovic gave us 155 minutes of remarkable tennis and captured the hearts of fans. I am sure that in the future, these players will be ranked not even among the TOP-10, but among the TOP-5 tennis players in the world”.
The doubles were not of less interest, where the final was marked by the hard victory of Elena Ostapenko (Latvia) and Alicja Rosolska (Poland) over Daria Jurak (Croatia) and Xenia Knoll (Switzerland). The match ended with the score 3:6, 6:2 (10:5). It is the first title in the career of
St. Petersburg Ladies Trophy 2017 became an important event for all Russian athletes and tennis fans. It will undoubtedly contribute to the development and promotion of women’s tennis in Russia and around the world.
