Gazprom Export Football Team Takes Part in a Tournament in Berlin

At Berlin’s Olympic Stadium football teams from around the world again faced off at the 8th GAZPROM Germania Cup. The tournament saw players from Hertha BSC Berlin, Schalke 04, and Zenit St Petersburg play alongside eleven company teams from Gazprom Group companies and other gas companies from seven countries. The tournament featured a host of ex-football stars such as former Schalke player Thomas Kläsener, Hertha institution Andreas Neuendorf, and former Russian national player Sergei Kiriakov.

Gazprom EP International’s side proved unstoppable, beating KazMunayGas 2:0 in the final to take the cup to Amsterdam for the third year in a row. Gazprom export’s team drew on prominent support, and was captained by Alexander Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of GAZPROM’s Management Committee. Gazprom export’s early victories against WINGAS, KazRosGas, and FC Schalke 04 were not enough to see it to the final, with a 0:1 loss to Gazprom EP International in the semi-finals before a victory against KazTransGas in the third-place play-off. Second-place winner KazMunayGas, from Astana, Kazakhstan, were first-time tournament participants and were an equal opponent to Gazprom EP International in the final. Hosting GAZPROM Germania team easily made it through the group phase to take seventh place following a 2:1 penalty-shootout victory against VEMEX.

“The GAZPROM Germania Cup embodies the international diversity that our group of companies enjoys. We’ve seen some very exciting games this year, and, despite the rivalries, the play has been nothing but fair”, says Vyacheslav Krupenkov, Senior Managing Director of GAZPROM Germania GmbH.
