Gazprom Export hockey team becomes two-time winner of the Challenge Cup
The Challenge Cup – a traditional hockey tournament for amateur teams – has been held for the seventh time at the Odintsovo Ice Palace. The 3-day sports event took place on February 22 to 24. It ended in a convincing victory for the Gazprom Export team led by its perpetual captain Alexander Medvedev.
For three days, six teams made up of hockey veterans, business and government figures fought for the trophy. First, the teams were split into two groups, draws for the playoffs were held, and on the next day, the semifinals were played. The ultimate winner of the cup was decided during the final match between two old rivals – the Gazprom Export team and the Meteor team.
After the regular and extra time, the winner was yet to be determined. But in the shootouts the Gazprom Export team had all the luck: Alexei Yashin scored the winning goal to make the score 4:3.
The Gazprom Export team became the leader by number of wins in the tournament, winning the Challenge Cup for the second time.
